To mark the 81st anniversary of D-Day, the museum had the immense honor of welcoming 23 American veterans to Normandy with the Best Defense Foundation. A highly symbolic visit to a place of remembrance, in the presence of those who, more than eight decades ago, liberated Europe.
Among the highlights of the day was the moving reunion between Raymond Rivoal, a young orphan rescued in 1944 by American soldiers of the 101st Airborne, and George K. Mullins, one of those rescuers, now 100 years old.
As the last witnesses to the Second World War gradually leave us, these moments remind us of the importance of cherishing living memory and sharing their stories while there’s still time.
In a new format, this meeting was held in the new temporary exhibition hall inaugurated on the same day. A book-signing session and Q&A session gave the public the chance to talk to the veterans.
These intergenerational exchanges are the beating heart of our mission: to bring history to life through those who wrote it.
